Time-management expert gives simple strategy to feel less busy
Time-management expert gives simple strategy to feel less busyTime-management expert gives simple strategy to feel less busyOften, Laura Vanderkam will reply to an email after what feels like an uncomfortably long time. In return, shell receive a message saying, Thank you for the swift responseVanderkam describes this recurring experience in her new book, Off the Clock, to illustrate how most people dont notice all the ways youre supposedly disappointing them. (For the record, Ive emailed Vanderkam multiple times, and she typically replies the same day.)The lesson here is that most of your must-do activities arent actually must-dos. You can give yourself a lot more leeway with them - sometimes you can even eliminate them - and you and the rest of the world will be fine.Vanderkam calls this challenging your stories about how you should spend your time. One example No one here takes a lunch break, so I cant. This is the kind of story that, as Vanderkam puts it, falls apart under cross -examination. Unless you are physically chained to your desk, you can probably walk outside for some fresh air. Will your boss fire you, demote you, or even reprimand you for being gone for 20 minutes? I dont know your boss, but Im guessing not.Similarly, Vanderkam purposes that putting away family members laundered clothes neatly in their drawers isnt something you absolutely need to do. Can your kids put away their own laundry? What would happen if the laundry never got put away neatly? Would your kids be scarred for life? I dont know your kids, but Im guessing not.In other words, Vanderkam is holding you at least partly accountable for feeling busy and overwhelmed. If we establish that the world wont explode if you take a lunch break and/or stop folding the laundry, then its really just the fear of sitting with your own discomfort thats holding you back.Even at work, you can probably cut some of your less rewarding tasks from your scheduleVanderkams observations reminded me of adv ice shared by the Stanford professors who wrote the book Designing Your Life. One of those professors, Dave Evans, previously told me about a woman who kept a log of all the work activities that gave her energy and drained it.When the woman shared the log with a colleague, the colleague asked her why she didnt simply stop doing the draining tasks. So she did. Apparently, none of her other coworkers noticed that shed cut out half her previous responsibilities, and she welches much happier. To be sure, its not always so easy to eliminate tasks you dont like, particularly at work. But theres a chance that if you simply identify the tasks that arent working for you, you will, in fact, be able to limit the time you spend on them.Vanderkam writes Everyone lives in his or her own little world, thinking their deficits occupy more space than they do in everyone elses minds. If you can shake off these delusions, you might find yourself happier and freer to do the stuff that really matters to y ou.This article first appeared on Business Insider.

Here are 4 ways to deal with a terrible boss so you can succeed
Here are 4 ways to deal with a terrible boss so you can succeedHere are 4 ways to deal with a terrible boss so you can succeedIn the perfect world, wed all have fabulous bosses - those who help us succeed, grow, and are just generally great to be around. But thats not always the case - whether its a high-powered career or a part-time job, having a bad boss can make a great job, terrible.A horrible boss can affect you in your personal life too, so its important to deal with the problem as soon as you notice it. Today, we speak with top life coachCarole Ann Ricewho is sharing with us her 4 tips on how to deal with a horrible boss.1. Gather evidenceKeep a note of anything they do to make you feel uncomfortable, which you can later look back on. This will allow you to re-evaluate the situation with a clear head rather than just going with thoughts that arrive in the spur of the moment. It may be that you simply have a personality clash rather than a true negative situation.2. Pinpoint th e problemTry to think about what they are doing that makes you feel they are a bad boss. Are they not listening to you? Do they steal you ideas? Maybe they dont follow through on promises? When youve figured that out, think about how you can fix it yourself. If they are stealing your ideas for example, it might be a case of you initially sharing those ideas in public, so everyone can be clear that they came from you.3. Gather allies and advocatesMaking friends wherever you can in the office. Its important to network with people on all levels - the girls at reception or the student who helps out in the post room, but also vertically with managers who out-rank your boss. This means that you have a good support group and advocates on your side who will champion you if you ever get into a sticky situation.4. Have a private chatIt takes a lot of courage to do so, but if you feel brave enough a one to one chat with the person is a great way to solve the issue at last. Go over all the note s youve written before you go in and let them know about the times where you have felt threatened or you feel they have been a bad manager. This is a preemptive strike and will allow you to take control of the situation yourself. This article was originally published on YourCoffeeBreak.co.uk.

Bad Reputations at Work
Bad Reputations at WorkBad Reputations at WorkAs hard as it may be to practice what I preach, Im a firm believer that we shouldnt care what others think about us. After all, its bedrngnis great for our self-esteem to constantly be worried about how people will perceive us. But, while I will stand behind this in fruchtwein situations, the fact of the matter is there is at least one instance in which what others think about you is extremely important- work. As Selena Rezvani- speaker, leadership consultant, and author of The New Generation of Women Leaders What You Need to Lead but Wont Learn in Business School and Pushback How Smart Women Ask- and Stand Up- for What They Want- says, The fruchtwein important career capital you have isnt your technical skills or academic pedigree. Its notlage your high-flying title. Its not even your relationships Its your reputation. So, in an effort to make you more likable at work, here are eight reputations youll really want to avoid earning. 1. The Late ArriverIts really annoying if youre perpetually late to meetings, even if its only by a few minutes. Youre not the only one whos busy, and consistently showing up tardy to the party is really disrespectful. So, plan accordingly and get there on time. Most likely, part of this planning includes determining why youre always running late. Perhaps you need to platzdeckchen your alarm for a different time or make your coffee at home instead of waiting in line at Starbucks. Whatever it is, figure it out and make the appropriate changes in order to be on time (or, better yet, early).2. The SnitchI was a fairly superior tattletale in my preschool days. And my teacher never failed to say, Did this person hurt you? Did this person hurt someone else? And if the answer to both was no, she would say Then why are you telling me this? Because I want to get this person in trouble, gosh darn it (Preschool was pretty cutthroat in the early 90s.)Basically, unless what someone else is doing is det rimentally affecting you or your team, you dont need to tell your manager. Its really none of your business. So, before you departure blabbing, answer the following Why am I telling this person this? If the only reason you can think of is just because or, worse, solely to make your colleague look bad, keep your mouth shut. Its not your place and, ultimately, it reflects badly on you. 3. The DrunkSo, you go out for an innocent happy hour drink with some colleagues and all of a sudden youre three sheets to the wind. (Hey, when drinks are $3 off from 3 PM to 5 PM, its natural to want to take advantage of that- I get it). But, that one drink too many causes you to badmouth your co-workers, stumble all over the place, share way too many personal details (you did what at your New Years party? Gross), and so forth. Just like that, no one at the office takes you seriously anymore. And the happy hour invites stop coming in, too. Heres the thing You can go get a beer with your team and not en d up embarrassing yourself. unterstellung two things arent mutually exclusive. Limit yourself to one or two drinks, and in addition, double fist it. Nope, not with two alcoholic beverages- beer in one hand, water in the other.Furthermore, you dont have to drink. Its perfectly acceptable to just grab some H20 or other booze-free drink instead. Remember Office happy hours arent really about the drinks- theyre much more about getting to know each other.4. The Drama Queen (or King)Have you ever had a co-worker who makes a big deal out of nothing? All the time? He runs around like a chicken with his head cut off, and when you ask him what the problem is, its quite anticlimactic (because after the huge fuss he made, you thought the entire world was burning). Yep. Thats a drama queen. Mistakes happen. People mess up. But not each one of these situations needs to be much ado about nothin. Before you stage a major freak out, take a step back from the problem at hand and assess it objectively . If youre having trouble doing that on your own, its OK to (calmly) chat about the situation with a colleague, or even your boss. Most things really arent as bad as you think they are, so dont pull the fire alarm all the time.5. The Lazy OneListen, there are always going to be tasks we dont want to do. Thats not just the nature of every job, but its the nature of life, too. But doing a shoddy job because youre too lazy hurts your team and you. Think about it If youre not putting in 100%, youre also not taking advantage of the opportunity to learn new things and build upon current skill sets. And, youre making your team believe youre fairly useless. Are you?The solution is easy here- put your best effort into everything you do. No, you dont have to go above and beyond all the time. But you should make sure you fulfill all of your responsibilities- and that you do it well. 6. The Know-it-AllWise words from my dad Just because youre smart doesnt mean you always need to be talking. And its true. Yes, you shouldnt hide the truth from your co-workers. If theyre going down a completely incorrect path and headed for disaster, you should steer them in the right direction if you can. But, you dont need to say something just to prove someone wrong or to show off how brilliant you are. Ask yourself Is what Im about to say relevant to the conversation? Does it help anyone, or does it just show off my completely unrelated knack for computing difficult calculus problems in my head? Telling everyone every single thing you know doesnt make them like you. It doesnt make them think youre the next Einstein. It makes them think youre really freaking annoying. 7. The Self-ServerSpeaking of hiding the truth from your colleagues, this is totally something the self-server would do. Instead of lending a hand, you keep valuable information to yourself and only share it when it can make you look good (i.e., in front of your boss or the CEO of the company). Other things the self-server do es? Takes credit for others work, throws people under the bus, and goes above and beyond to knock his projects out of the park but declines to help others (just to name a few slimy traits). Eliminate your ego from the game and learn how to do whats not only best for you, but for your team and the company as well. Climbing on top of others to ascend up the ladder may work well in the short-term, but when you come crashing down later, no one will be there to help you up. 8. Negative nanzig (or Ned)Negative Nancy types are the exact opposite of the people who try to find the silver lining in everything. Instead, they make sure everyone knows whats wrong with every single situation. Every. Single. One.Before you open your mouth, answer this Does this feedback provide any sort of value? Or is it just me whining again? Even if you do decide that it needs to be said, try to keep any adverse feelings out of it. Heres an example of what a Negative Nancy could say, The way the product team de signed this is complete crap, as per usual. Basically, just insulting the product folks and adding no suggestions to rectify the problem. Nice.Instead, one should say Ive noticed these design aspects make it a little tricky to accomplish our goal. Do you think we could discuss this with the product team to see if theres a way we can work together to improve it?Its really hard to look at yourself objectively- most times, you wont even notice that the habits you formed are causing others to throw darts at your photo. And, I repeat In most situations, I dont think you should give a second thought to what others think or say about you.But at work, a bad reputation can severely hinder your career success and movement forward. And, the truth is, if youve gained a reputation, its likely because its not just a one-time thing. Rather than panic that youve ruined everything forever, instead take a look at your behavior and start working hard to change it. Youll be the most beloved person in t he office in no time. Or, at least, more beloved than you were before.

5 Secrets of the Savviest Job Seekers
5 Secrets of the Savviest Job Seekers5 Secrets of the Savviest Job SeekersTried-and-true strategies might be staples of a job search, but sometimes landing a position requires a bit extra.Borrow one (or more) of these lesser-known secrets of the savviest job seekersto give your job search an edge1. Find the right person.Application materials do little good stuck in a catch-all mailbox. Warm up a cold email by sending it directly to the hiring manager at your targeted company. A little detective work on the employers website or through LinkedIn should yield results.Found what you think is the right name but lack contact info? Look for the email address of any real person at the company and study its structure. Then, plug into the format, such as Firstinitial.LastnamecompanyX.com or Lastname.FirstnameplaceY.com.2. Bring your experience to life.heidewitzka your audience with attention-getting ways to check you out. Think relevant, not gimmicky. Live links in your resume, a professional- looking personal website, a video or PowerPoint showcasing your accomplishments, or even an interactive timeline (such as Tiki-Toki) of your work history can help you become more than just another name.Or, use your cover letter space to pen an engaging narrative of a real-life situation in which your talents made a difference. Who doesnt love a good story?3. Ask an unexpected question. If the interview has been a solid two-way conversation and youre stumped on what to ask when all the important points were covered, you might try this unconventional move suggested by Linda Matias, owner ofCareerStridesand author of201 Knockout Answers to Tough Interview Questions. Ask, Can you think of a reason I wont be extended a job offer? Its a gutsy question, for sure, but it does open the conversation, Matias notes. It allows the interviewer to express concerns and gives the candidate an opportunity to address those concerns and remove any doubt.4. Ditch the neediness.Employers are interested in what you can do for them, not how much you need a job. Likewise, dont be surprised if an acquaintance bumped into at an industry mixer bolts for a mini quiche midway through your woeful tales.Instead, display natural curiosity with everyone you meet. Others will appreciate your interest, and you might discover an exciting lead.Or, try developing the mindset of a consultant. People will find your willingness to give advice or offer services refreshing, which can encourage stronger relationships and a greater desire to help you out.5. Consider every day hiring season. The savviest job seekers know that landing a position requires consistency. They follow through on their ambitious (but do-able) plans and revise their strategies when their efforts arent yielding returns. When fellow hunters slow down during summer months or holiday seasons, they keep going. Job Search Tips Inspired by The Beatles
Job Search Tips Inspired by The BeatlesJob Search Tips Inspired by The BeatlesYou may be saying to yourself, Job search tips inspired by the Beatles? Yup This iconic band has been in the public eye since 1960. Even though they only had a 10-year run, their messages have been heard over and over throughout the decades. The ability to create music that makes a large impact on a generation is no small job. The messages in those songs have to be simple and meaningful. Lets take a stroll down Abby Road to see just what kind of inspiration we can find in some of The Beatles hit songs. Hey JudeLets kick it off with one of the most elendable songs of 1968. I bet youll immediately start to sing the open lines to this song. Hey Jude, Dont be afraid. Take a sad song and make it better. Job hunting can be very stressful for some people especially if you are unemployed and are looking to return to the workforce asap. Whether it was voluntary or involuntary unemployment, being out of work is stres sful on almost every household. On top of household stress, you can add the grind of finding a job. Updating your resume, applications, interviews, researching companies, and networking make finding a new job well, a full-time job. Over this time a part can find themselves reminiscing over the loss of their past job, or being apprehensive about future opportunities. In a competitive job market, the constant rejection can wear on a person after a while. By taking some advice from Paul, one can reorient themselves toward the bright side of job hunting. If things seem to be hitting a wall and you dont know why take the time to make it better. Be direct with your prospective employers. Ask for feedback on how to improve your resume, interview skills, or to just find out how you can improve your job hunting skills. After all, that perfect job is out there somewhere, and you will want to be well polished to get it. Day Tripper/We Can Work It OutEveryone needs a reminder when we are caught up in drama. Life is very short and theres no time for fussing and fighting my friends Have you ever watched Bridezilla? Its that show about people getting caught up in the fuss and the muss of getting married. Tieing the knot is way up there on the list of lifes stressful processes. Getting caught up in picking on small details to find the perfect job or company will always slow anyone down. Its good to be well organized and put together, but there is a level of too much detail at the cost of moving forward. Be prepared for the job when its in front of you, not after it passes you by. Keep moving. You cant accept the perfect job offer if you are busy fussing with details that dont carry the weight with your prospective employer that you think they do. Cant Buy Me Love Remember this one.Cause money cant buy me love Stacking job applications from the highest salary to the lowest is one type of prioritization strategy that people sometimes use. Who doesnt want to be Scrooge McDuck ro lling around in piles of cash? In some cases, people choose their job based on the highest salary. The consequences of such, on their health and happiness, can be pretty dramatic. We have all heard cautionary tales and stories like the young law associates sleeping in their offices three or more nights a week. BIg pay often comes with big accountability. Can the extra money buy you love? The answer, according to The Beatles, is no. But what about you? Do you have or want a family? Do you like time off? Do you like strong company benefits? Are you willing to trade all or some of these things for a larger salary? All of these are important considerations to make when applying for your new job. Wealth is measured in all kinds of metrics. You just have to find out how you measure yours. HelpPeople often struggle with thisAsking for help. When I was younger, so much younger than today. I never needed anybodys help in any way. But now these days are gone. Im not so self-assured. Now I fin d, Ive changed my mind, Ive opened up the doorsThere are many situations where a little help goes a long way. You could be looking for a new job after working for the same company for 15+ years. You could be changing career paths. You could be brand new to the workforce. In all these instances, a little help will go a long way.Dont be afraid to ask your network for some fresh ideas and motivation. Find a mentor. Someone who has successfully completed the journey that you are on. Their perspective can help guide you along your way and can lift you up if you were ever to be in bad spirits. While family and friends are the low hanging fruit of networking, look elsewhere as well. People are very diverse in their experience and approach. Some people put peanut butter on both sides of their PBJ. Some do not. Some people cut the crust off. Some use whole grain. Some use white. But, the same goal of eating is being achieved by alland everyone has to eat and work.

Hybrid Jobs and the Hybrid Skills Candidates Need Most
Hybrid Jobs and the Hybrid Skills Candidates Need MostHybrid Jobs and the Hybrid Skills Candidates Need MostThe hybridization of jobs in America is a powerful trend that is transforming the job market and changing what employers look for in employees. The rapid expansion of new technology and the digitization of the economy have changed the character of jobs by integrating an element of technology into traditionally non-technical positions. What Are Hybrid Skills? Hybrid skills are a combination of technical and non-technical skills. What are considered hybrid skills will vary, depending on the job and the company. For example, very few employers now look for administrative beistand staff who can simply greet visitors, answer phones, and organize files. Employers need administrative staff with a hybrid skill set that includes social media, updating websites, designing presentation materials, as well as manipulating spreadsheet and database programs. At the same time, the ever-cha nging landscape of technology demands that workers in traditionally specialized or technology-based jobs have the softer skills to adapt to change and develop new products and services. For example, application developers dont just need coding skills. They must be able to write copy, communicate with designers about visual aspects of applications, solicit and integrate feedback from users, and solve problems as they arise. Developers must also have continual learning skills to update their coding techniques and adapt to new and revised platforms. Key Skills for Hybrid Jobs Burning Glass has analyzed a database of nearly one billion past and current job ads and deduced that one in four jobs show signs of hybridization, and one in eight positions are highly hybridized, encompassing more than 250 occupations. Burning Glass reports that the skills that drive hybridization fall into five key areas. Some are new skills and others are traditional skills being applied in new ways Big da ta and analyticsIntersection of design and developmentSales and customer serviceEmerging digital technologiesEvolving compliance and regulatory landscape Workers in traditionally soft-skilled jobs will benefit from cultivating the hard skills that will show employers that they are equipped to keep pace with technological developments in their sector. Job seekers and employees in technology-oriented and specialized jobs can distinguish themselves by enhancing the soft skills that will enable them to add value beyond narrow applications of technology. LinkedIn has produced a list of the most sought-after soft and hard skills for 2019. The soft skills in highest demand include creativity, persuasion, collaboration, adaptability, and time management. The hard skills that employers need the most include cloud computing, artificial intelligence, analytical reasoning, people management, UX design, mobile applications development, video production, sales leadership, translation, audio produ ction, natural language processing, scientific computing, game development, social media marketing, animation, business analysis, journalism, digital marketing, industrial design, competitive strategy, customer service systems, software testing, data science, computer graphics, and corporate communications. A candidate who has strong hybrid skills will have a mix of both the hard and soft skills required to get hired. One of the best ways to show employers that you have those skills is to match your credentials to the skills mentioned in the job posting when youre applying for a position, and highlighting them in your resume and titelblatt letters. Examples of Hybridized Jobs Digital security analysts must learn to identify complex cyber threats, but also have the communication and persuasive skills to convince management and coworkers to adopt stricter safety protocols.Technical recruiters must possess strong communication, persuasive, and interpersonal skills, while also compr ehending the complex technical demands of the positions that they are filling. They must alsomaster data-mining skills to identify appropriate prospects from candidate databases.Graphic designers need artistic sensibility and creativity to create appealing designs, as well as communication skills to extract customer preferences. They also must have strong technical skills to use computer-aided design systems and web-authoring tools.Pharmaceutical and medical product sales representatives must have strong verbal communication and relationship-development skills, as well as fluency in scientific concepts and research methodology regarding drug trials.Business and economic journalists must possess strong research, writing, and interviewing skills, andbeconfidentdeciphering complex financial reports and identifyingeconomic trends. How Hybrid Skills Can Boost Your Salary Burning Glass provides some illustrations from its research about how pay for employees with hybrid skills is enha nced Marketing managers received an average salary of $71,000, but when they possessed database management competency in SQL their average salary was $100,000, a premium of 41%.Civil engineers were paid an average of $78,000, but when strong people-management skills were added to their mix compensation rose to $87,000, a 12% premium.Project managers received an average salary of $75,000, but when they were skilled in Tableau they boosted their pay to $85,000, a 13% premium.General managers earned an average salary of $63,000, but those managers with strong data analysis skills secured an average salary of $81,000, a 29% premium.
