Alison Doyle, the author of about.coms job search blog, maintains a list of top job sites and career experts to follow on Twitter. Be sure to take a look at her list to find job search sites and many terrific career professionals to follow. Willy Franzen from One Day, One Job compiled another list of the top 25 must follow Twitter users for your job search. Im so pleased to be named on both of these lists! Im happy to share pertinent career advice and forward information from my colleagues (via retweets) on Twitter! Id be delighted if you follow me on Twitter HERE. What I liked most about Willys list is his suggestions about how to fill out your top 50 people to follow on Twitter. He says, The true power of Twitter comes through connecting with people who share your interests and passions. Instead of focusing on specific people, this second half of the list will focus on the types of people that you should look to connect with on Twitter. Finding them may not be easy at first, but once you find one, youll be able to look at whom theyre following to fill out the rest of your list. 26-30. Thought leaders in your industry You need to be up on the latest news. Find the big names in the industry that you want to be in and hang on their every word. 31-35. Local leaders in your industry. 36-40. People who share a common passion Although you may not be pursing a career that is aligned with their interests, you never know when meeting someone with common interests might help your job search. 41-45. Amusing people You need to stay entertained. A job search can be depressing, so make sure that you follow some people who can make you laugh. 46-50. Real life friends Its easy to get caught up in social media and social networking, but make sure that youre using tools like Twitter to connect with people that you actually know. Itll help you keep things in perspective. I think this is great advice! Let me know if you have any additional recommendations of people to follow for useful career and job hunting information! Theres A Record Number of Realtors Vying for Business
There's A Record Number of Realtors Vying for Business Last year 55-year-old Jill Ballantyne took a big chance. She left the stability of a 27-year career in education to pursue a long-time passion: Selling real estate. âItâs something I really believe in,â she says. Ballantyne isnât alone in making the leap. A decade after housing crisis, Americans are once again in love with buying, remodeling and selling homes. Cable television shows like âHouse Huntersâ and âMillion Dollar Listingâ attract millions of viewers. Nationally, home prices are again at record highs. In June, membership in the National Association of Realtors reached an all-time high of 1.373 million, eclipsing the pre-financial crisis peak set in October 2006. âThis is a trend you always see when the market is doing well â"â" the number of licensees increases,â says Ken Johnson, a real estate economist at Florida Atlantic University who was a real estate agent before moving to academia in 1995. He recalls an expression from his own real estate days: âWe always said the rookies are here to take the icing off the cake.â At first glance, working in real estate seems like an attractive proposition, with competitive pay and the promise of setting your own hours. And letâs face it: Who doesnât like looking at homes? Still, pros caution it may not be as easy as it looks. Commissions look fat at first glance, but agents are typically required to work under more highly-credentialed brokers â"â" who might take a significant cut. While there is money to be made in real estate, most of the big paychecks go to the top-producing agents. âThey are probably working 50 or 60 hours a week easily, and they are available at all times,â says Bob Hogue, of the Bob Hogue School of Real Estate in St. Petersburg, Fla. âFor someone who treasures their weekends and evenings, this probably isnât for them.â Finally, low barriers to entry mean that historically, new agents rush in during strong housing markets, only to crash out when things turn south, says Steve Murray, president of Real Trends, a real estate publishing and consulting company. During the last housing downturn in 2007, the number of realtors tumbled below 970,000. In other words, roughly one out of three real estate agents left the industry. âRight now the market is hot and good realtors make it look easy. But he adds, âWeâre a highly cyclical business.â Becoming an Agent On reason being a real estate agent is so popular is that you can, in theory, do it as a side gig â" or second career. The average age of a National Association of Realtors member is 54, and a third of all members are older than 60. âWe know that there is an increasing number of people retiring or nearing retirement,â says NAR chief economist Lawrence Yun, noting that it probably is not a coincidence that the number of agents per capita in Arizona and Florida is significantly higher than the national average. âFor a lot of people this is a second career,â says Kathy Condon, president and CEO of the MLS Property Information Network. âI see people starting because itâs the right time in their lives, not because theyâre timing the real estate market. That was the case for Ballantyne, who has over the last couple of decades supplemented her teaching income by buying and selling houses, working as an appraiser and owning rental property. But as a single mother, she wasnât ready to commit to working nights and weekends while she still had kids living at home. When her youngest started his senior year in high school in 2017, she decided it was finally time to get her license. âI worked part time initially, and last June I resigned from my teaching job to focus on real estate,â she says. Itâs Not as Easy as It Looks At first glance, it can look easy to make money selling real estate, especially in a strong market. Do the mental math: A $500,000 house with a 6% commission split between the buyerâs agent and the sellerâs agent works out to $15,000 each. In reality, that number could quickly get cut in half after accounting for marketing expenses, staging costs and commission sharing. Real estate agents are required to work under a broker. While every company has its own model, the traditional commission split is 60/40, says Hogue, with real estate agents keeping 60% of their share and handing over the other 40% to the broker, usually until they reach a certain annual quota. Consider the numbers. NAR members who have 16 or more yearsâ experience had a median gross income of $71,000 in 2018, down from $78,800 in 2017; members with less than two years of experience had a gross income of $9,300 last year, up slightly from $8,330 in 2017. Although itâs possible to do very well selling real estate, the big paychecks are typically going to the most productive agents. âAbout 80% of the business is done by 20% of agents at any point in time,â says Johnson. Whatâs more while housing prices are at national highs, the market may not be as strong as it looks. The number of home sales has essentially been flat for the last few years, according to Yun, and is 20% lower than it was in 2006. More agents plus fewer houses for sale adds up fiercely competitive market. âThe TV shows make it look glamorous and easy. People think, âIf I had my license I could make money on the side,ââ says Murray. âBut if youâre going to be successful youâre going to work your tail off for the first 18 months.â Making It Work Ballantyne had no illusions that moving into real estate would be easy even in her relatively robust market, Bend, Ore., but she was fully prepared to put in the 50- to 60-hour weeks sheâs been logging. If anything, she says, working long days and weekends helping people find their dream homes has been a welcome distraction from her own empty nest. So far sheâs closed about a dozen deals â"â" or more than double her goal for the first year working full time. She chalks up her success out of the gates to a large network of friends and acquaintances; a vacation rental she owns that helps connect with out-of-town clients; and the lessons sheâs learned buying and selling her own houses at many stages in life and the economic cycle. âThis is one career where age, and the experience that comes with it, might be an advantage,â she says, speaking while watering potted plants at one of her listings.

Top skills to put on your resume
Top skills to put on your resumeOn average, recruiters will only spend six seconds reviewing your resume. In those six seconds, they will decide whether youre worth bringing in for an interview or not. How do you go about using a piece of paper to convince a complete stranger that youre qualified for a job? googletag.cmd.push(function() googletag.display(div-gpt-ad-1467144145037-0) ) The answer is simple skills. Skills are basically keywords that highlight how qualified you are. You have to remember, recruiters, arent always well-versed in the job youre applying to. Their knowledge of it may be limited. As such, they will be scanning for relevant skills and keywords to give them an idea as to how qualified you really are. So its important to make sure you highlight the right skills.Sourceuptowork

I Cant Mourn The End Of Summer Because Working Moms Dont Get One
I Cant Mourn The End Of Summer Because Working Moms Dont Get One I have a love-hate relationship with summer. Every year as theschool yearscreeches to a halt, I get the same bittersweet feeling. The kids lose their structured schedules, and I lose my mind. I become envious of the moms who can plan whatever they want June through August. I begin to imagine what it would be like to have summers to do nothing but enjoy them. Translation No client meetings. No deadlines. No conference calls. No long days in New York City in 95-degree heat.Furtherbeimore, I would have time to cook balanced meals, rather than rely on the local pizza place to improperly nourish my kids. Maybe, just maybe, I would stop feeling guilty for not being the one who is re-applying sunscreen to my kids porcelain skin after three hours in the pool every day. Perhaps I would also stop comparing myself to the moms who seem to have their entire vacation-hopping summer schedules mapped out long before Easter Sunday. In tr uth, I actually cant even fathom what it would be like to take more than two weeks a year off, let alone a summer. I have worked since I was 13-years-old and from then on, have had a job and earned a paycheck. So its understandable that my envy meter cant go any higher right around June 15th when I want to throw in the towel at work and throw my phone in a bottomless body of water where it cant be retrieved and I cant be reached. In other words, I want to feel free.I dont necessarily envy the momshome with little kidswho need round-the-clock attention or have to abide by strict nap schedules. Rather, I think of all the moms I know that have school-age kids like mine who are independent and really dont require a whole lot minus being fed, directed and carpooled. I wonder what it would be like to take the kids away for weeks at a time without one passing thought of a job responsibility. I could join the masses of moms who post perfect, unfiltered Instagram photos of their kids frolick ing on the beaches of Nantucket, Amagansett or the South of France. I could be one of the moms who leisurely drops off her kids at camp and then proceeds to the courts for games of round-robin. Rather, I am the one kissing my kids goodbye on the fly as I simultaneously check the Metro-North train schedule or rush to my car to take a 900 a.m. conference call with a client in Europe. As quickly as summer comes though, it goes. September sneaks up and my mindset begins to shift. Every year. Guaranteed. This happens. I start to genuinelyappreciate my job, the example I am setting for my kids and that my husband treats me as his equal. I am thankful for guilt-free spending and that clients keep coming back. I feel a sense of accomplishment and ponder all the things I still want to achieve in my work life. Do I really want to give this up? No way. The reality is I am a better parent, wife and a more balanced person because I have a career that I love well, nine months out of the year anyw ay.--This article originally appeared on WorkingMother.com.
